On CM Punk: CM Punk is ultra talented and in the span of a couple of episodes he has given me reasons to reinvest in Nexus again as I am curious as to how the Punk leading Nexus business plays out over time. More importantly, I’m curious as to what young athletes will ‘breakout of the group in time as individual stars. Cena vs. Punk next Monday on Raw is a heck of a main event and good TV producing as it gives fans a week to think about the presentation and a good reason to make sure and tune in.

On John Morrison: Morrison, who’s star continues to shine brighter, and Sheamus had another hard fought, solid bout. Morrison is breaking thru but there are always fans who wanted that to occur ‘yesterday.’

On Shawn Michaels: Raw was highlighted, IMO. by the announcement of Shawn Michaels being the first inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame for 2011. HBK is SO deserving and is arguably the greatest in ring performer of all time and let me tell you folks that statement covers a lot of ground.

Announcing HBK as being the centerpiece of this year’s HOF Induction Ceremony the night before WM27 certainly give one even more viable reason to buy tickets for the event which go on sale Saturday.

While having dinner in OKC a few weeks ago with HBK we talked about three hours about a zillion things seemingly including family and business. During the conversation the subject of the WWE HOF came up and Shawn mentioned to me how much going in ‘some day’ would mean to him. Little did either of us know at that point in time that Shawn wouldn’t have to wait long and nor should he.

HBK was a ‘natural’ for the wrestling biz. He was a life long fan. He was a very good athlete. He had a natural swagger and loads of confidence, some critics would likely say too much confidence, once he stepped inside the ring. HBK knew that he was going to be great because he was willing to put in the work and study to get there.

Shawn’s first territory was Mid South Wrestling and I was there. His first major break in WWE was in the mid 90′s and I was there.

Being at the right place at the right time to be able to see the complete evolution of this all time great is a true professional blessing for me.

Over his long, distinguished career, whether one liked him or not, and some didn’t like the HBK of specific eras, one always knew that what one got from Shawn was what he felt at the moment and he wore his Texas sized feelings on is sleeve.

If one had a heated conversation in the locker room about a non ring matter with Michaels he would have the same delivery then as he would if he were addressing an adversary in the ring. Shawn Michaels may have been called HBK, among many other well earned nicknames, but Shawn Michaels never played a ‘role’ as he always was himself, for better or for worse.

When HBK mentioned me in his farewell address on the MNR after he lost to Undertaker at WM26 in Shawn’s I will freely admit that I was touched and Shawn’s remarks brought tears to my eyes. He will never know how much that brief mention of me meant after the weekend that I experienced in Phoenix.

Congratulations Shawn. You are special in so many ways. The man you have grown to become is admirable. I am so proud of you for a multitude of reasons but nothing as much as you becoming the wonderful husband and father that you are.

Indeed nothing on MNR for me came close to rivaling HBK’s surprise appearance and Shawn Michaels once again stole the show w/o saying one, single, solitary word.

Now THAT’S a performer.

On Sting: We’re getting lots of emails and Tweets, @JRsBBQ, regarding Sting these days. BTW has he left TNA? I actually don’t know the answer to that one but suspect that Sting is still officially with TNA. Nonetheless many fans hope that Sting is inducted in the WWE HOF in Atlanta at WM27. Theoretically, if Sting were not working for another wrestling company, it would be a splendid idea. It still might be but that’s not for me to speculate on. Sting was the first and only WCW star that Turner’s people ‘made’ in Atlanta that never wrestled for WWE as best that I recall. I’d love to help produce a definitive Sting DVD some day as I was around him when he first started in the biz and teamed with the Ultimate Warrior, then known as Rock, in the UWF as the tag team duo known as the Bladerunners. The Bladerunners were going to be positioned as UWF’s answer to the Road Warriors.

On Paul Orndorff: Sorry to hear of Paul Orndorff was recently diagnosed with having cancer. PO is a tough man, I know this without hype or speculation, and saw him in action as a young dude being mentored by Cowboy Bill Watts in Mid South Wrestling. Paul was a former running back for the University of Tampa and played with former NFL star Freddie Solomon. Our prayers are with PO and I have complete faith that Mr. Wonderful will be physically wonderful at the end of the day. Paul was a helluva hand in his day who was never afraid of ‘heat’ when he was one of the most hated villains in the business. Trust me, all wrestling villains could not honestly say that they had absolutely no fear of intense, fan angst but Mr. Wonderful could.

On The WWE’s MVP: Who will be WWE MVP by year’s end. If he stays healthy an argument could be made, at least in my point of view, that it might be CM Punk. Punk knows how to be physical and punishing in logical, easy to follow methods plus the guy can talk. Those traits work for me. Plus he won’t miss work, moan about non, major injuries and seems to never burn out.

On Daniel Bryan: Can Daniel Bryan win the WWE Title? Of course he CAN win it but the question should be will he win it? I don’t think that many experts thought Eddie Guerrero would take the top prize in WWE because of a perceived lack of physical size and other issues but Eddie succeeded. IMO physical size isn’t the key trait to be WWE Champion. It’s all about the individual having a superior skill set, the person’s character, appeal to the masses and reliability….or so I feel.

– Pro Wrestling Syndicate has announced that Low Ki will be appearing on their March 5th show in New York against Davey Richards. Also taking place on the show will be Brutus Beefcake, Leticia Cline, Robbie E, Cookie and the reunion of DX members X Pac, Billy Gunn, and Road Dogg. The show will be at Long Island’s Center Island Sports in Ronkonkoma NY.

– Raven will be doing a comedy show Thursday at Tailgators in Clifton Heights, Pa at 8 PM. Indy wrestlers and fans can get three dollars off admission if they show a stub that they support Philadelphia wrestling.

On Last Night’s Raw: MNR certainly had its share of moments the night after the TLC PPV. It speaks to the WWE’s commitment to come off a solid PPV on Sunday with a stellar Monday night show. It also speaks volumes regarding the athletes/performers mindset and work ethic to forge ahead after a challenging ‘night at the office’ in Houston where many of their bodies were introduced to tables, ladders and chairs.

On Punk vs. Cena: The issue that started tonight between John Cena and C.M. Punk has my curiosity. I think that these two will have some stellar bouts when they finally wrestle. Punk is very hungry to re-establish himself as a dominate, singles performer. Punk and Cena can also carry the verbal load of this main event level issue.

On Daniel Bryan vs. Regal: Loved the short albeit competitive and well wrestled Daniel Bryan vs. William Regal match. I’m likely too ‘old school’ but I would have no issues watching these two men compete in a multiple segment match any time. Broadcasters that have the opportunity to call a match such as this should seize the moment because they don’t come along as often as they once did.

On John Morrison: The evolution of John Morrison continues. As many have pointed out over time and of which I agree, John has some young HBK tendencies/mannerisms but his biggest step, in this fan’s eye, is recently demonstrating more physical toughness in the ring. It reminds of when HBK added another layer to his body of work many years ago on PPV against Mick Foley aka Mankind in what was essentially a physical war. Some ‘experts’ on Twitter feel that Morrison’s verbal skills are an issue but I don’t. Morrison should simply be himself and grow into his main event skin and never allow himself to be perceived as disingenuous. Bottom line is that it takes time and patience for one to move to and subsequently stay at the elite level of any company.

On Booker T: BTW #2 it seemed to me that Booker T was in excellent shape when we spoke on Sunday afternoon in Houston. That statement will likely fuel ample speculation and I’m not saying that Booker wants to or ever will step back in the ring but, as always, one never says never in this biz. With two beautiful twin children just coming into this world, I don’t ever see Booker T going back on the road full time. Nonetheless it was great seeing him and his lovely wife Sharmell. Ol Book did quite well in the wife department, much like yours truly, as he ‘out punted his coverage.’

On The Hall Of Fame: Emailer….I have no idea who will be inducted into the WWE HOF this year in Atlanta but your question as to if Wahoo McDaniel would be inducted I would suggest not likely. Do I think that Wahoo is deserving? Heck, yes. But I’m also biased when it comes to the former Sooner and one of the toughest men both physically and mentally I ever knew in the business. For those that saw ‘the Chief’ in his prime you know of which I speak.

On The TLC PPV: Looking forward to being in Houston for the WWE PPV, Tables, Ladders and Chairs this Sunday as a fan. As an announcer, broadcasting matches that end without a pin fall or submission are particularly challenging. I’m sure the broadcast team will handle this matter well but it is a different presentation for them and takes a different mindset on the approach to those types of bouts.

On Brock Lesnar: If Brock Lesnar were to become a coach of UFC’s TUF I would not be totally shocked but it would be somewhat surprising. If Lesnar can market his upcoming book, add some marketing stretch to his growing list of sponsors, etc the idea would be viable. I do have concerns that Brock would want to relocate to Vegas for the 6-7 weeks that it would take to tape the next season but if Frank Mir were the other coach then the build to their much discussed ‘rubber match’ would be special.

On Goldust: Sorry to hear of Goldust’s rotator cuff injury that will apparently require surgery. This is usually a 5-6 month recovery period. Don’t forget about Goldust’s biography that would make a good stocking stuffer and should be interesting reading. He’s had a helluva life for such a young man. hate to see any one hurt especially someone who has worked so hard to become relevant again. Last time I saw Goldust he was in, without question, the best physical shape of his life. Some day Goldust will likely be a great coach/teacher of the biz.

On The Miz: WWE Champ The Miz gets a shot on TMZ later today (Wednesday) which he will no doubt knock it out of the park. Miz was tremendous on the Food Network cooking show, ‘Dinner Impossible,’ that we did a year ago at Summer Slam. He stole that show with ease and will like do the same on TMZ TV later today. Miz is a work in progress and it should be encouraging for WWE fans of just how good Miz can become in time if he stays healthy and focused on becoming the best antagonist in the biz.

On Rey Mysterio: An emailer asked me why Rey Mysterio has become so popular while many of his fellow Lucha Libra stars did not become bigger in the USA. Firstly, Rey has ‘it’ and ‘it’ can’t be manufactured. Rey also throughly understands all the ins and outs of the biz after starting in it when he was 14 or 15 years old. Rey also understands that ‘less is more’ and that doing 2-3 spectacular maneuvers in a match or a sequence is always better than doing a half dozen or more of them in such quick fashion that the majority of the eye opening maneuvers can’t be processed or remembered minutes after they are completed. Too many wrestlers today try to squeeze too much into their bouts and as a result much of what they execute is watered down and rendered less meaningful. Over game planning the acrobatic aspect of one’s match is a common mistake in many pro wrestling circles especially when talents perceive that their in ring persona’s are not established with the majority of the fans and the only way to garner attention is by becoming strictly an amazing young man on the flying trapeze.

On Josh Matthews Announcing Raw: I thought Josh Matthews did a really nice job replacing Michael Cole Monday night on Raw after Cole discovered Randy Orton’s RKO. Josh is a student of the game and works hard and I hope that he gets more, higher profile opportunities in the future.

On MVP’s WWE release: “MVP requested his WWE release to explore other options as I understand it. I personally like MVP and have always enjoyed our relationship. He’s a talented guy who has endured and overcome some major league challenges in his life. MVP’s life might make for a good movie as a matter of fact. I always preferred the antagonist MVP better than the fan favorite MVP but that’s merely a personal preference. The guy is a survivor and he will perceiver and be just fine. Being off the road during the holidays isn’t a bad thing and it gives him time to assess what he wants to do. We had some particularly fun conversations when Oklahoma had their home and home college football series with MVP’s fav team, ‘The U.’ ”

On Hurricane Helms verbal assault of Shawn Michaels: “I’m not getting involved in that matter nor am I commenting on it. You would be amazed at how many people have asked me my thoughts on this subject of which I have none.”

On This Week’s Raw: “Anxious to watch Raw tonight to see how Michael Cole justifies his actions of last week where he did all that he could to make sure that Miz retained the WWE Title. What will Cole do? Get a reprieve from the ‘mysterious’ Raw GM, hire a good attorney?? In any event the interaction between Cole/King/Punk should be entertaining and better each week.”

On John Cena:
John Cena arguably delivered his best ever promo Monday night on Raw as it felt naturally organic and truly reality based. The buzz on Cena’s ‘firing’ by Wade Barrett is a hot topic on this site and one that will likely be addressed in more detail next Monday on Raw on yet another three hour special on the USA Network. Philly is a great spot for the King of the Ring TV special and I would love to be on hand, I’m not going to be for conspiracy theorists, if for nothing else to head over to Tony Luke’s and grab a cheese steak.

On The Miz:
We’ve received many emails and Tweets (@JRsBBQ) regarding Miz as the new, WWE Champion. I’ve been touting Miz for months on this site as a future big time player and one that I felt several months ago would be in the main event mix at Wrestlemania in Atlanta. Looks like that may well happen now. As for Miz being WWE Champion and specifically for all the naysayers, I suggest that you allow this matter to evolve more than just a few hours before damning it. Antagonist champions who are physically beatable on any given night and who have talented albeit annoying verbal skills are a nice persona traits for a successful champion to have.

On Commentators:
We received several emails from fans wanting me to comment on CM Punk’s work at the broadcast table Monday night. Any thing that I say in this regard will be examined word for word on the ‘net and then interpreted in any attainable way to make for a better headline or sound byte. Same goes for the questions I receive about Grisham and Striker on Friday Night Smackdown. Why should I address them and then, no matter what I say, be thrown under the bus so someone can manufacture a sound byte? I wish no ill will on any broadcaster simply because, poor me as Tony Soprano would say, I’m not sitting out there any longer. My run exceeded my expectations of which I am very thankful. Commentating on wrestling TV shows is a daunting task and likely more challenging today than ever before for a multitude of reasons. The product has changed drastically over the years plus a wrestling TV show now serves many masters and agendas with a variety of focus. I’ve never been a huge fan of the three man announce booth expect perhaps on special occasions such as a PPV, etc. Having a three man team on weekly, two hour shows isn’t my cup of tea. With that said, no wrestler walks out to the announce booth and is as good as they will be, if they invest their time and energy into the broadcasting process, over time. Most wrestlers have to realize that them doing commentary isn’t about them but about enhancing the other wrestlers that they see on their TV monitors. All that comes with practice and preparation.

On The UFC’s Roy Nelson:
A rep of Roy Nelson casually contacted me about the hard hitting MMA fighter wanting to get in the WWE at some point. So the rumors of Nelson wanting to jump from MMA to WWE aren’t totally unfounded. However, one has to wonder if this isn’t a case of leveraging or posturing to some degree by the big puncher. Roy Nelson might become a star in pro wrestling if he applied himself to it but so many athletes come into the wrestling biz thinking that it’s easy and takes little effort to be good at it. Nothing could be more wrong. For the record, I have not gotten involved in this matter and likely will not. If I were Nelson, I would cultivate my relationship with UFC and look to earn some hefty paydays before looking for the next in ring career move. Nelson fits well into the UFC heavyweight division and I could see him earning some nice money with his puncher’s power the next couple of years especially if he would focus more on his conditioning.

Jim Ross fala da Raw e de Michael Cole

Jim Ross postou recentemente no seu blog algumas linhas onde aborda a sua participação no ultimo Monday Night Raw e também a relação que tem com Michael Cole.

JR diz que sentiu-se meio enferrujado mas ainda assim foi algo inesquecível, diz ainda que é complicado alguém dar tanto de sí a uma profissão (4 decadas) e de repente abandonar aquilo que sempre fez.

Sobre ,Michael Cole, JR diz que muitos fãs mandam-lhe emails ou questionam no twitter se JR tem algum problema com Cole ou vice versa ao que o Ross responde que a relação entre ambos é boa e que o que viram no Raw foi apenas Cole a fazer o seu trabalho.

Motivo pelo qual Jerry Lawler faltou à gravação da Raw

Jerry Lawler, actual comentador da Monday Night Raw não esteve presente na gravação do show em Manchester, tendo sido substituído por Josh Matthews. Primeiramente o motivo avançado para a sua ausencia foi uma lesão no joelho, porém algumas horas depois, Jim Ross, antigo companheiro de Lawler disse no twitter que na verdade tratava-se de uma infecção decorrente da lesão no joelho, mas que em principio The King ficará bem.

Jim Ross fala de Steve Austin, Lita e Mick Foley

O ex-comentador da WWE, Jim Ross postou recentemente no seu blog a sua opinião sobre Steve Austin e os rumores que dão como certo a sua aparição na Raw em Dezembro. JR aborda ainda o regresso de Lita ao Monday Night Raw bem como o novo livro de Mick Foley. Para os interessados, deixo-vos os excertos referenciados anteriormente.

About Steve Austin appearing on Raw on 12/27: To the best of my knowledge, Steve Austin has not been officially scheduled to appear on an upcoming Raw as has been reported elsewhere. Steve is preparing to film another movie in Vancouver soon that will take him into December. At that time I assume he will head to his Texas ranch for some R&R and to celebrate the holidays. Jan and I hope to visit Steve and his crew at the Broken Skull Ranch in late December or early January. BTW Steve’s latest movie Hunt to Kill is out next week on DVD and it’s a cool, kick ass movie that I really enjoyed. I think that you will too especially if you like to see Stone Cold kick the bad guy’s butt. Good storyline/script that makes for some stout action/adventure.

On Lita returning to WWE: Enjoyed seeing Lita make her cameo on Raw Monday night. She was one of the all time great Divas in WWE and I can still vividly remember her job interview in my WWE office many years ago. I assume she will not come back to WWE full time but, as a fan of her work, it would be nice to see her back for a short run. I think that the team of Trish & Lita vs. Lay Cool, for example, would be a really nice attraction type bout at WM27. Just an idea.

On Mick Foley’s new book: Mick Foley has written yet another entertaining book, ‘Countdown to Lockdown.’ It’s available now and I really enjoyed it. I thought Mick really overachieved on his latest literary efforts based on what I perceived the book to be about before reading it. Mick is a genius at engaging his audience and I have actually read ‘Countdown’ twice. It will be fun to see Mick on HLN Friday night with the talented and funny Joy Behar. Some day it would be great to possibly have Mick as a panelist on the Legends of Wrestling Roundtable discussions.
